Medical plastics industry has attracted great attention due to its high added value, high growth rate and broad market potential. Through the use of new plastic materials, medical devices can be safer and more environmentally friendly.
Over the past 20 years, the international market for medical plastics has been growing rapidly, ranking among the top in the annual growth rate of various medical device products.
1. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
USES: blood bag, all kinds of tubes, tubes, tubes, artificial peritoneum, etc.
Features: low cost, wide application range, easy to process, good chemical resistance, but poor thermal stability.
2. Polycarbonate (PC)
USES: hemodialysis filters, various shells, fittings, surgical tool handles, oxygen tanks, needleless injection systems, perfusion instruments, blood centrifuge bowls and pistons.
Characteristics: toughness, strength, rigidity and heat - resistant steam detoxicification, high transparency.
Suitable for injection molding, welding and other molding process, easy to appear stress cracking.
3. Polyethylene (PE)
Low density polyethylene (LDPE) purpose: medical packaging and intravenous container.
High density polyethylene (HDPE) application: artificial urethra, artificial lung, artificial trachea, artificial larynx, artificial kidney, artificial bone, orthopaedic surgery repair materials.
UHMWPE is used for artificial lung and artificial joint.
Characteristics: high chemical stability, good biocompatibility, but not easy to bond.
4. Polystyrene (PS)
Use of crystalline polystyrene: laboratory utensils, petri dishes and tissue culture dishes, respiratory equipment and suction tanks.
High impact resistance polystyrene USES: catheter tray, heart pump, dural disk, breathing equipment and suction tank.
Features: low cost, low density, transparent, stable size, radiation resistance (disinfection).
5. Polypropylene (PP)
USES: disposable injector, connector, transparent plastic cover, straw, parenteral injection nutrition package, dialysis film.
Characteristics: non-toxic, tasteless, good mechanical properties, chemical stability and heat resistance.
Good insulation, low water absorption, good solvent resistance, oil resistance, weak acid resistance, weak alkali resistance, good molding, no environmental stress cracking problem.
But the forming shrinkage rate is large, the manufacture of thicker products prone to defects.
Surface inert, difficult to print and adhesion.
Can be extruded, injection molding, welding, foam, hot molding, machining.
6. Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)
USES: medical catheter, oxygen mask, artificial heart, drug release equipment, IV connector, rubber bag of sphygometer, wound cloth for drug delivery.
Features: good transparency, high strength and tear performance, chemical resistance and wear resistance;
The hardness range is wide, the surface is smooth, the antifungal and the microorganism, has the high water resistance.
7. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)
USES: vein, heart membrane, endoscope, forceps catheter, trachea, other tubes, bottles, press cloth and other medical equipment.
Features: high crystallinity, small friction coefficient, good heat resistance, high chemical stability, strong acid and strong base and all kinds of organic solvents do not function with it.
There is good biological compatibility, blood compatibility, no damage to human physiology, no adverse reactions in the implanted body, high-temperature disinfection, suitable for use in the medical field.
8. Polyamide (PA)
Purpose: hose, connector, adapter, piston.
Features: flexibility, bending resistance, high toughness and not easy to break, chemical pill resistance and abrasion resistance.
Does not release any harmful substances to the human body, so does not cause inflammation of the skin or tissue.
9. Polyether ether ketone (PEEK)
Application: it can replace metal for surgical and dental instruments, replace titanium alloy to make artificial bone.
During the clinical operation of minimally invasive surgery, metal instruments may cause image artifacts or affect the doctor's surgical field. PEEK is as tough as stainless steel, but it does not produce artifacts.
Features: heat resistance, abrasion resistance, fatigue resistance, irradiation resistance, corrosion resistance, hydrolysis resistance, light weight, good self-lubrication, good processing performance.
